Presenting the Gospel
Week 12, Sunday August 23rd

Theme for this Sunday: What is Evangelism?

Passage for Sunday: John 1:41-46 + Rom 10:14-17

This week we’re taking a quick pause and considering - what is evangelism? In the book of Acts we see household evangelism practiced. This is where new believers shared their faith with those who lived in the Graeco-Roman household that included not just family members but servants, families of the servants, friends, and business associates. It's well recognised today that the vast majority of people come to faith through the witness of a friend, relative, or associate.
In the John passage we have a helpful example of biblical evangelism. What characteristics of evangelism do we see modelled?
The Romans passage tells us the importance of Christians sharing the gospel to others. We can only share about something that has first impacted our own lives. If we have experienced the joyful effects of gospel changing our lives, then we should be filled with enormous energy to share with others. At the same time we need to recognise that the gospel also humbles us because we’re saved by God’s grace. So we need wisdom and compassion when we do speak. Our boldness to stems from the love & acceptance we have experienced from God that diminishes our fear of disapproval and rejection.
So the gospel fills us with joy, humility, & confidence that helps us to share the gospel effectively. If we lack in any of these areas then we need to come to God in prayer that God will make these real in our life so we can be effective in drawing new people to Jesus through our words & actions.
  • Think of 4 people who would be interested in being part of the church or small group & are open to you, that you can begin to pray that God would establish a connection with you - and start praying for them by name.
