Presenting the Gospel
Week 10, Sunday August 9th

Theme for this Sunday: Counter - Attack

Passage for Sunday: Acts 4:32-6:7

In this passage we see that the early church had a fearlessness to boldly proclaim and radically live out the gospel. This included radical organised generosity that saw those most vulnerable cared for through more structured ministry practices. In the midst of this radical generosity we have the story of Ananias & Sapphira - a cautionary tale of the dangers of religious hypocrisy and spiritual pride.
From Acts 5:12 - 6:7 we see a spiritually vital church community that exhibited such power & boldness that people were either attracted to it or frightened by it, but either way the average person held a deep respect for who the church community, what they stood for, and the impact they were having. The church was growing significantly whilst at the same time attracting increasing opposition. We see three different forces opposing the early church - hypocrisy inside the church, persecution from outside the church, and burn out within the ministry of the church.
  • How did the Spirit help the early church face the three types of opposition?
  • What ares some of the characteristics of a spiritually vital church this passage reveals?
  • Why was Ananias & Sapphira’s sin deal with so seriously & how can we avoid falling into the same trap?
