CAFFE Open Day

Then & Now

CAFFE (Crafts And Friendship For Everyone) at Capalaba held its biennial Open Day on Saturday 27 May.  The theme for this year was “Then and Now” and several crafts and items from yesteryear were on display.  An embroidered tea cozy from 1912, hand-made wedding dresses from the 1950s and 1980s, heritage quilts, doilies from the 1950s, lacework and tatting, tapestry, cross stitch and much more. There were demonstrations of tatting, lace making and loom crafts.  One gent was even spotted having a go at the lacemaking bobbins.  Displays of current crafts included members’ own work as well as samples of the items made by CAFFE members for the number of charities the group supports including: · beanies and blankets for St Vincent’s Hospital; · baby beanies, wraps, booties and mittens for Mt Isa and the Mater Maternity hospitals; · comfort teddies for the Redlands Community Centre; · clothes and toys made for the Samaritan’s Purse shoeboxes and · knitted items for KOGO (Knit One Give One).  Many attendees marveled at the amount of items produced by the CAFFE members. The craft stall was very popular with bargains of quilts, coat hangers, toys, tea towels, cushions and other crafted items purchased.  Many of the approx. 60 attendees enjoyed the morning teas and sat chatting and reminiscing over memories of times past.  The lucky door prize of a Springtime Quilt was won by Dorothy Anthonisz. A total of $739.44 nett was raised from the event and these funds will be shared between Women & Co (a domestic violence support group operating in the Redlands) and the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. Thank you to all the folk who came along to support the event. We hope you enjoyed the morning.  For anyone wishing to come along to CAFFE, the group meets at Capalaba hall on the first, third and fifth Tuesdays each month from 9:00 till 11:30am.

CAFFE - Baby Wraps

For Mt Isa Hospital

April 2023

The members of CAFFE craft group at Capalaba were recently visited by Melissa and Amanda who told the story of nurses in the maternity ward at Mt Isa Hospital being in desperate need of wraps for new-born babies.  The Hospital covers the entire north-west area of the state including indigenous communities and some of the islands. Over 400 babies were born last year and due to the dire shortage of wraps, nurses had resorted to wrapping new-born babies in pillowcases and tea towels.  They also need booties and socks for tiny hands and feet as babies, particularly indigenous babies, often have cooler extremities. Our wonderful ladies immediately stepped in and were able to provide an initial supply of 35 handmade and purchased wraps and a small supply of knitted booties as a start and will make the hospital one of the number of charities and organisations they support. Melissa was delighted with the response and commented it was an excess baggage problem she was happy to deal with!

May 2023

Mother’s Day Babies at Mt Isa Hospital Dressed by CAFFE Readers may recall a story in the April edition of Journeying Together which told of the desperate need at the Mt Isa Hospital for baby wraps, beanies, booties and mittens for their maternity ward.  The ladies at CAFFE happily rallied to make and send an initial supply to meet the immediate need and have continued to produce and send items as part of their regular production of charity goods.  They recently received a lovely email with photos of four sweet little babies who arrived just in time for Mother’s Day.  The babies, including a set of twins, were all premature and are currently in the Special Care Nursery, and are pictured dressed in their finest wraps and beanies supplied by our very own CAFFE ladies.
